The Republic of Burundi is a small country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania and the DR of the Congo. Burundi has 17 provinces and 114 communes. Burundi has suffered for more than 10 years of civil war and ethnic conflicts what resulted in more than 400,000 casualties.

It has an estimated population of more than 7,000,000. Its population density tops second in Africa. A 95% of the population lives from agriculture. However, demographics and soils’ poverty make almost impossible feeding people around the whole year. The severe malnutrition rate is on the 10% annual. Nevertheless, it reaches a 30% to 40% during December and January.

Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world.
